WHO I AM

EMILIANO S. PARRA ORTIZ
Emi, as his friends and family call him, is a young man full of vitality and happiness. He suffered from hypoxia at birth, and at 3 months old, he was diagnosed with cerebral palsy. He has been in therapy since he was 6 months old, and as part of that therapy, he began painting. He was 12 years old, and the first times he painted, he thoroughly enjoyed it and fully concentrated on what he was doing. That's how his mother (Alicia Ortiz Keinrad) discovered that he liked to paint and that he was very good at it.
Emiliano paints with his heart. That's why he's found painting to be a very easy way to delve into his feelings and then capture them in his artwork. He uses his hands and fingers as brushes, creating different shapes and color combinations as a means of communication. When he's painting, he concentrates completely on his work. He decides where to move his hand and how to do it to combine the different colors. It's his time and his space, something very much his own that shows us his inner being and spirit. His work is very varied, with a very personal style and a great deal of color.
In Emiliano's works, we can appreciate what a young man with cerebral palsy can express and communicate from within, pouring all his heart into each one; showing us that even with many motor limitations, inner strength and the will to succeed are strong enough to overcome any difficulty that may arise.
